Currently Incarcerated Membership

Your Role in the NAIScholars

The NAIScholars is accepting applications from currently incarcerated individuals who are seeking to advance their education or serve as teaching assistants. We seek to connect with the incarcerated population through applications and referrals.

The NAIScholars contains members who are both currently and formerly incarcerated, and we follow an approach that emphasizes community and human connection, enabling incarcerated people to develop relationships with welcoming individuals with different levels of system experience. We prioritize mentorship, community building, and compassion. Research from the Vera Institute highlights that education in prison can help you develop your skills involving empathy, motivation and aspirations, self-reflection, and social obligations.

Membership Tiers

  1. Students: Incarcerated individuals who are seeking to begin, or are currently enrolled in an education program. If you are interested in mentorship from scholars, community with fellow students, and curricula created by currently and formerly incarcerated people for currently and formerly incarcerated students, the NAIScholars has a place for you. Following education completion, you can then be an NAIScholars member as a scholar.
  2. Scholars: Incarcerated scholars who have completed a degree. Incarcerated scholars can use their insight to develop curricula for students, serve as teaching assistants for educators, and may even serve as adjunct professors. The NAIScholars wants to enable scholars to use their education in a formal capacity.
